Mutual funds (MFs) - flush with cash amid record inflows in July - invested heavily in the Rs 25,000-crore qualified institutional placement (QIP) of India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI). Fund managers acquired SBI shares worth Rs 10,200 crore last month, making the lender their biggest buy in July.

Cash holdings of equity mutual fund (MF) schemes moderated in September amid a slowdown in fresh inflows. Equity MF schemes held cash worth Rs 1.76 trillion at the end of September 2025 - about Rs 400 crore lower than the previous month, according to a report by Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research.

With the RBI capping top managements' tenure at lenders, Kotak Mahindra Bank's head Uday Kotak on Monday said his current term as the managing director and chief executive is till December 2023 and the board will take a call on succession in due course. Kotak also stressed that the commitment to institution building has been a core value for the entity over the last 36 years of its existence. The RBI last week capped MD and CEOs' terms at private sector lenders at 15 years, from October 1 onwards, but has allowed the serving bank heads to complete their current appointments. Uday Kotak, who is also among the promoters of the lender, has been at the helm for over 17 years already.

Fund managers are divided on the prospects for beaten-down information technology (IT) stocks, reflected in the wide variance in equity mutual funds' (MFs) sector exposure. An analysis by Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research shows that while six large fund houses were overweight the sector relative to its weight in the Nifty 200 index, five were underweight as of October 2025. UTI MF had the highest exposure at 17.8 per cent, while SBI MF sat at the bottom with 5 per cent.
The banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector has moved back into focus for investors this calendar year, after lagging the broader market for two consecutive years. BFSI stocks have outperformed benchmark indices in 2025 so far, driving a steady rise in the sector's weighting within the Nifty 50 index.

Kotak stepped down as MD and CEO of the bank effective September 1, 2023, four months ahead of his term was to end. Canadian firm Manulife and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), an Indian automaker with interests in financial services, have signed an agreement to form a 50:50 life insurance joint venture (JV) with a total capital commitment of up to Rs 3,600 crore each totalling Rs 7,200 crore.

Private lender Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd said on Thursday its board had approved the acquisition of local rival ING Vysya Bank Ltd, in which Dutch lender ING Groep NV owns about 43 per cent, in an all-stock deal.
